Purchased light switch timer (LST) to solve a particular problem.I had a PIR light in outdoor passageway, however also had boiler flue in passageway. The products of combustion were constantly triggering PIR. Changed to switched bulk head light controlled by LST, problem solved. However it has the advantage of being able to move LTS to another location in minutes.Very versatile product.

    Question

The unit has been working OK for a year or so & now won’t switch the light on. It seems as though the wheels are not going down just far enough (despite the cradle still being as hitherto. With 2 Duracell AAs fitted I observe that by the time the on-cycle finishes, the wheels are against the top battery, which could do with being lower in it’s housing! I noted the suggestion in the manual about the ‘n’ shaped insert but couldn’t see from the photo where they are fitted. Any ideas what is amiss and how to solve, please? I also note that the eliptical cam stops just after its full travel, but unsure if that’s relevant or how to re-locate it perpendicular?

4 out of 5 Useful product

Good points: Good quality product, Very easy to install, multiple on off times possible. There are buttons for manual on and off so tou can just keep it installed if you want.

Not so good points: bit larger then i expected, motor slight noisy when it switches on or off, needs resets now and then.

Usage tips: if planning to use while away suggest you check display for the days of week and am/pm times.

    Overall good and useful product.

    Question

Would you be considering a version of this timer that could operate the switches individually at different times?

    Mydome customer service:

    Hi Mr Smith,

Switched On Products is in the process of designing a new light switch timer. Programming individual lights is a feature that is being considered.
All customers will be notified of the new model when its ready.

5 out of 5 A very clever idea.

I’ve had this product in use for almost a year. It is incredibly easy to fit and use, and easy to programme (compared to most other timers I’ve tried). The fact that you can simply lift it out of the cradle at any time and use the switches normally makes it ideal for anyone who’s tried to use a built-in electronic timer manually. Whoever designed it deserves recognition; a very original answer to a decades-old problem, and one I have no hesitation in recommending unreservedly.

      Hi Dorothy,

The light switch timer is the practical upgrade to the traditional timer plug, it has been designed to work on the mains lights only i.e. lights controlled with a wall switch. They cant be used like the traditional timer plugs used on lamps.

5 out of 5 Had to buy another light switch

Mostly this is a good little unit, particularly helped by avoiding any involvement with wiring.
First fit – nothing happened. Added both packers – still nothing happened. I then had to buy a new lightswitch. The original (Tenby) switch must have been low-profile at 7mm thickness. I got a new switch at B&Q at ~9mm overall thickness and this worked, after adding one of the packers.
The application was to provide some random evening operation of a kitchen light in an empty property. I was disappointed that the Random function could not cater for this as it is programmed just for a varying 3 minutes at different times each night between 1am and 5am, meant to simulate loo trips for a bathroom. As the unit has 9 programmes, I was able to get round this by programming varying kettle trips each evening on top of fixed meal preparation and bed time drink.
The unit is electro-mechanical with a wheel running down / up the switch to activate it. Hopefully it should be durable.
Overall it seems to be a well thought through design with on / off override buttons. Could have been better with a sustained hold on hours / minutes button to advance rather than a push per increment.
If the property is occasionally empty then the unit is easy to install into the cradle sitting on the switch. When you return all you need do is remove the switch from the cradle to go back to easy access to the basic lightswitch.

      Hi Val,

To reset your light switch timer you will need a pin / paper clip.

Just above the “day” button you will see a small hole with reset next to it. Use your paper clip / pin to press down on that button.

You should find that the clock turns back to 12:00 am again.

      Hi Steve,

The light switch timer is a retro fit timer that sits on top of your existing light switch. It uses a simple 7 day programme that you can choose to activate lights. Upon being activated it physically rolls over your switch turning lights on or off. To put it simply the light switch timer mimics the same action your finger would do when turning the lights on and off. The only difference being your presence will not be required!

You can have individual days programmed or the entire week. The timetable works on a 7 day week. This remains your active timetable until you decide to change it i.e. programmes will run continuously beyond the first week.

Battery life is expected to last between 12-18 months so you shouldn’t find your changing those often. A low battery indicator becomes visible when power is low so you are aware its time to change them.

I hope this all helps but should you have any questions please feel free to contact me and I will be more than happy to help.

Hoped this would work for the cost of it, but it doesn’t work on metal face plates, everything set properly, wheels on rocker set to double switch, when it rolls over face plate swithes it only turns one on, then when off is pressed it does turn it off. Not impressed especially for cost.

    Question

can this unit be used to light the traditional fluorescent tube?

    Answer:

    Hi Bernard,

The light switch timer works with any light that’s on a standard switch plate. As long as the light can be activated using a standard ‘light switch’ on the wall i.e. a light connected to the mains electric then the light switch timer can be used to programme those lights in your absence.

    Question

What happens when the batteries run out while i’m on holiday? Is it smart enough to default to “OFF”? It could otherwise be a potential hazard to leave them on all the time & attract even more attention.

Something wrong with this post? Thanks for letting us know. If you can point us in the right direction...

    • mydome

      Admin (verified owner)

      Hi Bob,

When battery levels are low a low battery indicator appears on your screen in the bottom left hand corner. The light switch timer has a battery life between 18 – 24 months so you shouldn’t find your self replacing them often.

We recommend looking at the battery power status prior to going on holiday. If you find that the low power indicator is present on the screen then we advise changing the batteries before you leave. If the low power indicator is not visible then batteries won’t need to be replaced.

I hope this helps but should you have any questions please feel free to contact me and I will be more than happy to help.

Can this timer be fitted over a normal 4 gang wall light switch? Thanks

      Admin (verified owner)

      Hi Billy,

Unfortunately the light switch timer is not compatible with a 4 gang switch. The light switch timer uses a cradle to house the timer unit. This cradle fits on top of all standard UK switches. 4 gang switches are bigger and more rectangular in shape so the cradle does not fit over them.

I hope this helps but if you have any more questions please feel free to contact me and I will be more than happy to help.

2 out of 5 Faulty Product

I have used one of these timers for several years now without problem. So much so I just purchased an additional unit. Unfortunately I’ve had to return it to Amazon with an apparent fault. The unit would attempt to switch the light on (or off) fail and emit a loud clicking sound stoppable only by removing the unit from its holder. Tried on several light switches (which presented no problem with my old unit) with the same result. Using the n spacers only aggrevated the problem. I’m now reluctant to purchase a replacement in case there is now a subtle design fault which will re-occur. Any thoughts on what the problem could be?
    Regards

Works really well though I find I have to look at the instructions each time I want to programme it well. Had a small issue when it wouldn’t flick the switch but by using the enclosed packers it was a doddle to adjust the light switch relative to the timer – hey presto! worked brilliantly.

5 out of 5 I wish i thought of this!

I ordered this because I wanted a product that was able to cope with LED bulbs and the electronic replacement light switches you can get won’t work with low wattage LED bulbs One small point to note is that it does project beyond the original light switch about 30mm. Brilliant idea which works well – highly recommended.

Great product , would be 5 stars except it needs more spacers supplied to work with my light switches so I had to make some more of may own, they just need to supply a few more or a selection of thicknesses. Prompt reply to email from inventor. If battery life is as great as quoted this is a great design overall and works with all bulb types.

      Hi Robert,

The light switch timer random feature works in conjunction with your programmed timetable. If one of the random programmes conflicts with an existing programme then that particular programme takes precedent in that instance only.
I hope this helps but if you have any other questions please feel free to ask and I will be more than happy to help.

How many watts does it tack to run, I have many electrical items on stand by, The back ground watts of these cost £150 per year,
This is about 0.15Kw, most of other switches take 0.04Kw to run the timer,
How electrical energy does this unit take to run the timer?.

      Hi Ian,

The light switch timer is a battery operated product and therefore does not use any of the mains electrics. The 2AA batteries are estimated to last you anywhere between 18-24 months and a low battery indicator shows when battery power is low and you should consider changing batteries.

I hope this answers your question but please feel free to contact us if you have any more.

      Hi Maggie,

Clear plastic n shaped inserts are designed for use on slightly slimmer switch plates and used to increase the depth of them. The light switch timer wheels should roll over the entire face of your switch and the n shaped inserts help to do this when the wheel clips your switch instead.

      Hi Doug,

The light switch timer is battery operated device and therefore works independently to the mains power supply. If you experience a power cut the light switch timer will remain active and so will all your timetabled programmes. Your programmes will only be erased if the batteries are removed for more than one minute or if you decide to change them yourself.

5 out of 5 EASY TO INSTALL AND WORKS WELL

We have 2 outside lights a nice porch light and a garage flood light. It always seemed a waste to have them both on at the same time. So I have this setup so that the floodlight comes on at midnight for security when the other one goes off. It has been working a treat for a number of weeks now with no issues and took seconds to setup.

This is a fantastic gadget which is very easy to use. It works on a normal light switch and turns the switch on and off according to preset times by means of a small wheel/cog powered by standard AA batteries. It allows you to time a main light to turn on and off when you are out avoiding the need to plug in a lamp. A much better idea, especially if you have pets that could knock a lamp over. You can easily override the timer by pushing an on/off switch on the unit. It is installed simply by slipping a plastic cradle over a light switch and the placing the timer unit in the cradle with the cog wheel lined up with the switch. The unit can stay in place continuously or be removed if desired. It does make a whirring noise turning the switch on and off but it is only a second or so of noise. There are 9 separate programme opportunities over 7 days allowing almost any combinations of timings on different days. There is also a random function which turns the light on in the night at random times for about 3 minutes each time. This is useful if you are away as it mimics someone getting up in the middle of the night for a comfort break. I would suggest not using this feature if you are at home otherwise the noise might disturb you. The unit can be adjusted to move 1, 2 or 3 cogs at the same time depending on how many rocker switches are on the light control.

      Hi Jane,

The light switch timer can operate any lights that are controlled using a switch plate. This includes lights that are outside and inside.

The light switch timer sits on top of your existing switch plate and therefore controls all the switches on that particular plate i.e. if its a 1,2 or 3 gang switch you can choose if not all of them which ones you wish to control. To control more than one rooms lights you will require additional light switch timers; one for each switch plate you wish to programme.

The light switch timer is a mechanical device that sits on top of your existing switch plate and physically rolls over the switch for you. As a battery powered device it does not require any wiring and for this reason is compatible with all types of bulbs.

      Hi,

Your switch plate appears to have been installed upside down.

When turning the lights on the switch should be pressed ‘down’.
When turning lights off the switch should be pressed ‘up’.

This can be easily resolved. You will need to turn your switch plate 180 degrees. You wont have to do any wiring. Upon doing so your light switch timer will work as per normal.

5 out of 5 Switched on and de-lighted!

What a clever little device. I needed a timer for the hall lights but my old one would not work as I had new LED bulbs. So, I saw this one which uses a motor to switch on a simple on/off switch. I had to remove the old timer and replace it with a a normal switch but assuming you already have one in situ, there is no wiring to be done. Simply loosen the screws and slip the cradle under the edges and tighten up the screws again. Now, pop 2 batteries (not supplied) into the unit, adjust the wheels for either a 1, 2 or 3 switch gang, programme the unit and slide into the cradle. Tested by hitting the on button, turned the light on accompanied by a loud whirring sound from the device as the wheel hit the old rocker switch. Obviously, the same happens when switching off. That noise might wake someone up if the switch is in or near a bedroom. It would certainly scare a burglar if they had entered the house!

But, one word of warning, if you are using this in conjunction with a configuration that allows eg a hall light to be switched on and off upstairs and downstairs, it will confuse the unit if you do either from the other switch. So, you need to ignore the other switch (unless there is an emergency and you need light immediately). I will get round this by setting the off time late on after I have gone to bed (I used to switch the downstairs light off from the switch at the top of the stairs).

Hope this all makes sense and I would recommend this device especially if you intend to use LED bulbs.

5 out of 5 Excellent, very impressed, highly recommend, now have 3! Perfect especially when away,

Easy to set up, although at first I got it to switch the lights on but not off, so I adjusted the cogs into a different position than the instructions & added the part that makes it sit out a little ( you’ll know what I’m on about if you buy one!) it worked perfectly. I’ve posted some photos to show the item.. I initially thought it was a bit bulky and intended to take it off & just use it while away on holidays or in the winter to turn on garden lights but I’ve got used to it and have left it as it looks like a heating control panel. I am so impressed that I ordered another for our porch & one for our under cupboard kitchen lights which is a 3 switch, (only need it to switch on 1) There’s multiple time settings, and you can manually switch on/off. I thought the price about right even if it is just made from plastic, it would be extremely costly to have our light switches replaced to do the same job, I can’t see the point of having a temperature gauge though. It is a little noisy ‘whirring’ when switching on & off, but that’s hardly what I call a problem. i have used them on 1 switch, 2 switch and 3 switch plates. One review said they had to buy batteries but all of my 3 orders came with batteries. Company is excellent to deal with.

Display is nice showing day, time and temp. Can manually turn on/off with buttons on display. The only draw back is all light switches either turn on/off, you can’t work them independently of each other.

A really great idea but I can only get it to work on standard light switches. Most rooms in my house have a metal switch which is slightly slimmer than a standard white plastic switch. I couldn’t get this to work on any of those.
I also thought this was pretty expensive for what it is, especially as I couldn’t get it to work on most of my light switches.

4 out of 5 Bulky, but effective

A bit bulky, but it does the job. Note that if you are using it on a dual or triple switch then you can select which switches are controlled by this by adding/removing wheels. However all selected switches will operate on the same timers. Any switch not selected will not turn on or off with device and the only way to operate these unused switches is to remove the unit. Removing the unit is no hardship and for us the particular set of switches are rarely used so it isn’t a big deal. However I can imagine it could become annoying if this timer is used on an often used switch and you have to keep removing the unit to get at switches not on the timer.

It would get 5 stars if switches could be on individual timers and if switches could be individually triggered without removing the unit.

      Dear Bryn,

The light switch timer can not be used to control lights independently. In this instance you would need to remove the unit from the cradle and use the switch manually when you are home, returning the unit to the cradle when you leave the house and want to use the timer.

This would of course entirely depend on how you intend to use the product and appreciate it may not be practical for situations where you want to use the timer for security lighting when you are home.

5 out of 5 A fabulous way to improve security of your house

A fabulous way to improve security of your house whilst you are away or to have lights on when you arrive home. The fitting of this unit is so easy – which is what attracted me to it. It’s well thought out and easy to programme.
